What does the maintenance of a solar farm cost?

Professional maintenance of a solar farm costs on average €0.40 to €0.90 per panel per cleaning, depending on installation type and park size. For a ground park of 10,000 panels with two cleanings, green maintenance and inspection per year, this amounts to about €14,000-€18,000 per year, a fraction of the annual yield, but enough to avoid 10 to 15% yield loss.

What does robotic cleaning cost per type of installation?

The biggest cost in solar farm maintenance is cleaning. Solarco works with volume rates: the larger the farm, the lower the price per panel.

Ground installations

On ground installations, Solarco cleans an average of 5,000 to 6,000 panels per day with the SolarCleano L1, a large cleaning robot suitable for long, continuous rows.

Large roof installations

On roofs, Solarco works with the SolarCleano F1, a more compact robot for limited space and lighter roof structures. Average speed: around 2,000 panels per day.

Roof installations are more expensive than ground installations due to additional safety measures (VCA, fall protection) and more complex logistics.

What determines the exact price?

The rates above are guide prices. The exact price per panel depends on:

  • Pollution type: light dust is removed faster than a stubborn layer of ammonia or moss
  • Row length: long, continuous rows are more efficient than short, interrupted rows
  • Roof type: inclined vs flat, easy vs difficult to access
  • Accessibility: access roads, fencing, distance to water connection
  • Contract duration: an annual contract is more advantageous than a one-off intervention

This is why Solarco always puts together a customised quote after a site analysis.

The 5 cost drivers of solar farm maintenance

Cleaning is the biggest item, but not the only one. A complete maintenance plan includes five components.

1. Cleaning (robot cleaning + pure water)

The most frequent and directly measurable maintenance activity. Frequency: 1-2× per year for rooftop installations, 2-4× per year for ground parks in agricultural or industrial environments. Solarco cleans with pure water and certified robots, no chemicals, no scratches, no residue.

→ See our cleaning service for more details.

2. Green maintenance

Specific to ground installations: vegetation under and around panels must be controlled. Weeds, grass and bushes grow against the underside of panels, cause shade and attract moisture and pests. Frequency: at least 2-3× per year in the growing season.

→ More about green maintenance at Solarco.

3. Thermographic inspection

Detects hot spots, defective bypass diodes, cell cracks and delamination invisible to the naked eye. Frequency: 1× per year recommended, for parks older than 7 years consider inspecting 2× per year.

→ Read more about thermographic inspection.

4. Visual inspection + report

Included in every cleaning at Solarco. Technicians check panels, cabling, connectors and construction for visible damage. After each intervention, you receive a report with before/after photos, abnormalities found and recommendations, crucial for warranty claims, insurance files and ESG reporting.

5. Electrical controls and construction

Monitoring of inverters, AC/DC cabling, earthing systems and support structure. Frequency: 1× per year or on indication of monitoring data.

→ See general maintenance.

Calculation example: annual maintenance ground park 10,000 panels

Below is an indicative annual overview for a ground farm of 10,000 panels (~4 MWp) in an agricultural setting.

Cost itemFrequencyEstimated annual cost
Robotic cleaning (10,000 × €0.50)twice a year€10.000
Green maintenance3× per year€2.500 - €4.000
Thermographic inspectiononce a year€1.500 - €2.500
Visual inspection + reportIncluded in cleaning€0
Total estimated€14,000 - €16,500/year

What does this maintenance deliver?

A farm of 10,000 panels (~4 MWp) produces around 3,500,000 kWh per year.

At an electricity price of €0.08-€0.12/kWh, that's €280,000-€420,000 turnover per year.

Without maintenance, you lose 10-15% revenue: €28,000-€63,000 per year.

The maintenance cost of ~€15,000 is thus recovered 3 to 4 times.

The most expensive mistake in solar farm maintenance

The biggest mistake we encounter in practice: start late. Many park owners think they don't need maintenance for the first 2-3 years because the panels are new. But pollution starts from day one.

After 2-3 years without cleaning, the layer of dirt is attached to the glass. The first cleaning then costs more because it requires more intensive work, sometimes in several passages. Meanwhile, invisible problems accumulate: hotspots damaging cells, dislodged connectors disabling strings, moss growth blocking drainage.

Most costly consequence: warranty claims rejected. Most module manufacturers require proof of periodic professional maintenance. No maintenance history means no claim even in case of a factory defect.

Our advice: start maintenance in the first year and build up a documented history. The costs are minimal, the protection maximum.

How Solarco makes efficiency recovery measurable

Maintenance only makes sense if the effect is measurable. Solarco uses two methods to demonstrate efficiency restoration in black and white.

Method 1: Reference inverter: We clean the entire park but deliberately leave one inverter in its original (dirty) state. The monitoring software then immediately shows the difference between the cleaned and dirty strings. This provides irrefutable evidence.

Method 2: Before/after monitoring data: The installer or monitoring party performs measurements at a certain solar irradiation before cleaning. After cleaning, the same measurements are repeated. The increase in efficiency is measurable and documentable.

Both methods provide hard data that you can present to management, financiers, insurers and in ESG audits.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly falls under maintenance of a solar farm?

Maintenance includes cleaning, visual and thermographic inspections, monitoring, electrical checks, green management and structural checks. At Solarco, visual inspection and reporting is included in every cleaning.

How often should solar panels in a solar farm be cleaned?

This depends on location and contamination: land parks in agricultural areas require 2-4 cleanings per year, roof installations usually 1-2 times. The frequency is ideally determined data-driven based on monitoring data.

When is robot cleaning better than manual cleaning?

For installations of around 2,000 panels or more, robot cleaning is faster, safer and more consistent. On ground installations the SolarCleano L1 cleans 5,000-6,000 panels per day, on rooftops the SolarCleano F1 cleans around 2,000 per day.

How do I measure yield recovery after cleaning?

Via the reference inverter method (leaving one inverter deliberately dirty) or via before/after monitoring at comparable solar irradiance. Both methods provide documentable evidence.

Can I also have a one-off cleaning done without a contract?

Yes, Solarco also carries out one-off cleanings. But an annual contract is more economical per turn and guarantees that your park is structurally maintained and documented.

Frequently asked questions

How much does solar park maintenance cost per year?

For a large ground-mounted solar park, cleaning costs roughly €0.40 to €0.90 per panel per visit. Including vegetation management and visual and thermographic inspections, total annual maintenance for a park of around 10,000 panels comes to approximately €14,000 to €18,000. Without maintenance, yield losses can reach 10 to 15% a year, which is usually many times that cost.

How much can a business save by having its solar panels cleaned?

On commercial installations, soiling can go unnoticed and cause a 5 to 15% loss in yield each year. On a commercial roof, that lost output can run to thousands of euros a year, against a far lower cleaning cost. In practice, this means payback periods are often between 1 and 5 months.

Do you offer maintenance for farms, industrial sites and solar parks?

Yes. Solarco provides professional maintenance and cleaning for commercial roofs, farms, industrial installations and solar parks, using cleaning robots for large surfaces. We combine cleaning with thermographic inspection and vegetation management, and hold VCA safety certification, the Benelux safety standard for contractors. For recurring maintenance, we draw up a tailored contract.

How often should commercial, agricultural and solar park panels be cleaned?

Commercial and industrial installations are generally cleaned at least once or twice a year, depending on how much pollution there is in the surrounding area. Ground-mounted solar parks often need two to four cleans a year. Near heavy industry, motorways or intensive farming, more frequent cleaning is advisable.

What faults occur in commercial solar installations after 5 to 10 years?

After 5 to 10 years, common problems include ageing cabling and connectors, loose clamps and rails, and micro-cracks, delamination and hotspots in the modules. Left untreated, these lead to structural yield loss, recurring inverter faults and a higher fire and safety risk. A combination of visual, thermographic and electrical checks catches them in time.

What does Solarco's solar panel maintenance include?

Maintenance includes a visual inspection for damage, loose cabling, broken clamps and hotspots, together with measurements and tests covering the inverter and yield data, among other things. The service also covers grounds maintenance, such as mowing between the panel rows. Regular maintenance extends the service life of your system, improves safety and helps keep your manufacturer's warranty valid.
