Why is cleaning a ground-mounted installation so important?

Ground-mounted arrays face soiling that rooftop or carport installations are less likely to encounter: sand, mud, splashing water and vegetation that easily spreads across the panels. This soiling reduces the amount of sunlight reaching the panels and can cost you 5 to 10% of your yield.

Regular cleaning also prevents hotspots: areas where dirt and minor damage cause extra heat. That heat can cause permanent damage and shorten the lifespan of your panels. By having your ground-mounted installation cleaned in good time, you not only get a higher yield, your installation also lasts longer. Read more about solar panel cleaning.

How often should you have a ground-mounted installation cleaned?

That depends heavily on the surroundings. Is your installation in a dusty farming area or right next to a busy road? Then dirt builds up faster than on panels in a quiet, clean environment.

In most cases, a clean every one to two years is enough. With extreme soiling, for example from a lot of sand, dust or vegetation, we recommend a clean every six months. Want to know the best frequency for your installation? Get in touch and we’ll look at your situation and give you advice that fits.

All frequently asked questions
Does rain help keep my ground-mounted installation clean?

Rain washes away some of the loose dirt, but it’s usually not enough for stubborn deposits and mud. Regular professional cleaning is still needed for optimal yield.

Can I clean my ground-mounted installation myself?

You can, but without the right knowledge and equipment you risk damaging the panels and injuring yourself. A professional company knows exactly which techniques and safety protocols are needed.

Will my panels be damaged during cleaning?

No. We use soft brushes, pure water and robotic cleaners that are specially designed to clean panels efficiently without scratching them.

How long does it take to clean a ground-mounted installation?

That depends on the size and how dirty it is. With our robotic cleaners, we clean even large areas quickly and thoroughly.

Does cleaning frequency affect my panels’ warranty?

Often, yes: many manufacturers recommend professional cleaning to keep the warranty valid. Irregular or improper cleaning can lead to problems that aren’t covered by the warranty.
