Why solar panels in France get dirty faster than you think
With more than 20 GW of installed capacity, France is Europe’s second-largest solar market. It is also a country of contrasts: a Mediterranean climate in the south, farming regions in the north, industrial zones, and both an Atlantic and a Mediterranean coastline. Panels get dirty in a different way in every region, so a single approach is not enough.
Mediterranean regions: dust, Saharan sand and heat
Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Occitanie and Corsica regularly face sandstorms from the Sahara. Combined with high temperatures and little rain, these deposits form a stubborn crust that can cause yield losses of up to 20% within a few weeks. Cleaning in spring and after every dust episode is close to essential.
Farming and industry in the north and east
Hauts-de-France, Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté combine intensive farming, pollen, livestock and heavy industry. Ammonia from cattle and pig farms forms a sticky film on the panels, made worse by particulate matter from the A1, A2, A4 and A31 motorways. Without maintenance, the average yield loss is 10–16% a year.
Coastal and humid regions
Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine combine salty sea winds, heavy rainfall and constant humidity. Sea salt travels up to 25 km inland. Together with frequent rain, this encourages algae growth and limescale. Coastal installations often need cleaning twice a year.

Our team arrives with an pure water tank and a robot or telescopic brush. You do not need to be at home. We take before photos, clean every panel and finish with after photos.

Do you cover all of France from Belgium?
Yes. Solarco is a Belgian company based in Tessenderlo-Ham, but we work in France every month. The regions closest to Belgium (Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Île-de-France) get priority. For the south and west, we group jobs into combined trips.
How does VAT work for French companies?
We invoice with Belgian VAT (21%). French companies can reclaim this VAT through the intra-community reverse charge mechanism. Our invoices include the required intra-community VAT numbers. Private customers pay the Belgian rate.
Is cleaning deductible for a PV plant with a feed-in tariff?
Yes. Cleaning counts as an ongoing operating cost, so it is deductible. Installers’ maintenance contracts also often require it, to keep the warranty and the contractual performance.
Do you also clean ground-mounted installations and carports?
Yes. Our robots are built for large flat and sloping surfaces. For car parks with carports, we use telescopic brushes or aerial work platforms, depending on the height. We regularly work on parks of 1,000 to 50,000 panels.
Can you provide reports suitable for insurance audits?
Certainly. Our reports include before and after photos, thermal images, detailed findings and recommendations. Our clients regularly use them for insurance claims, manufacturer warranties and annual performance audits.
How often should solar panels be cleaned in France?
It depends heavily on the region. Mediterranean areas and zones exposed to Saharan sand: 2 to 3 times a year. Farming and industrial zones: 1 to 2 times a year. Atlantic coast: at least once a year, ideally twice. Homes in rural or urban areas with a temperate climate: every 1 to 2 years.
Do you work with French installers?
Yes, we work with several French installers who offer cleaning to their customers as a maintenance service. We can also work on a white-label basis. Get in touch to discuss the terms.
What if it rains on the scheduled day?
We reschedule free of charge. Light drizzle is not a problem: our robots and operators keep working. In heavy rain, storms or wind above 40 km/h, we move the job to the next suitable day.
Do you work with large retail and logistics companies?
Yes. We work for groups with multiple sites in France, often under multi-year, multi-site contracts. We manage the planning, centralised invoicing and consolidated reporting.
How long does a job on a 5,000-panel plant take?
About 1.5 to 2 days with our automatic robot, depending on access. We work continuously during daylight, with a team of 2 to 3 people plus the robot. For plants with more than 20,000 panels, we deploy several robots in parallel.
