Why solar panels in Germany get dirty faster than you think

With more than 90 GW of installed capacity, Germany is Europe’s largest solar market. Dense development in the Ruhr, intensive farming in Bavaria and Lower Saxony, industrial zones along the Rhine and more frequent Saharan dust episodes combine to create soiling that calls for regular cleaning to keep your installation efficient.

  • The Ruhr and urban areas

The Ruhr, the Rhine-Main region and Berlin-Brandenburg have the highest particulate levels in Germany. Along the A1, A3, A5, A40 and A100, we measure an average efficiency loss of 10–15% at installations within 2 km of the motorway after 18 months without cleaning. Soot from diesel traffic and industrial emissions is particularly stubborn.

  • Farming regions in Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria

Germany is one of Europe’s largest agricultural producers. Regions with intensive livestock farming, especially Weser-Ems, Münsterland and Lower Bavaria, have high ammonia levels. The ammonia binds with fine dust to form a sticky layer on the panels. On farms, we measure yield losses of up to 20% after a single season without cleaning.

  • Coastal regions and Saharan dust

Along the North Sea and Baltic coasts, salty air travels up to 20 km inland. On top of that, all the southern states regularly see Saharan dust episodes, which cause significant yield losses in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg every year. After a Saharan dust event, yield losses can exceed 15% within a few days.

Frequently asked questions about solar panel cleaning in Germany

Can’t find your question? Browse all frequently asked questions or get in touch.

All frequently asked questions
Do you come to Germany from Belgium?

Yes. Solarco is a Belgian company based in Tessenderlo-Ham that works in Germany regularly. North Rhine-Westphalia and the border regions get priority. For projects in Bavaria, Saxony or northern Germany, we plan in clusters so we can work efficiently, with no extra travel costs.

How does VAT work for German companies?

We invoice with Belgian VAT (21%). German companies can offset it in their own VAT return under the reverse charge mechanism. Our invoices include all required intra-community VAT numbers. Private customers pay the Belgian rate.

Is cleaning subsidised for EEG installations?

Cleaning itself is not directly subsidised under the EEG, Germany’s Renewable Energy Sources Act, but it counts as a regular operating cost and is therefore deductible. For many installations, the installer or insurer also requires it by contract to maintain the warranty and performance.

Do you work with German installers?

Yes, we already work with several German installers who offer cleaning as a maintenance service. White-label partnerships are possible: ask us about the terms.

How quickly can you be on site in Germany?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks after you accept the quote, and often within 1 to 2 weeks in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. For states further away, we plan in clusters to work as efficiently as possible. Urgent jobs (an insurance case, a sudden drop in yield) can be carried out within 5 working days.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Germany?

Homes in urban areas: every 1 to 2 years. Businesses near motorways or in industrial zones: once a year. Farms and coastal regions: twice a year is recommended. Solar parks: 2 to 4 times a year. After every cleaning, you receive advice based on what we find on site.

Do you offer express cleaning after Saharan dust episodes?

Yes. After major Saharan dust events, we have express teams available for southern Germany, including Baden-Württemberg. These jobs can be carried out within 5 to 10 days, even without an existing maintenance contract.

Are your reports suitable for insurers and audits?

Yes. Our reports contain everything German insurers and EEG inspectors expect: before and after photos, thermal images, findings, recommendations, the date and the operator’s name. They are regularly used for warranty claims and annual audits.

What if it rains on the scheduled day?

We reschedule free of charge. Light rain is not a problem: our robots and operators keep working. In heavy rain, storms or wind above 40 km/h, we move the job to the next suitable day.

Do you also clean ground-mounted installations and solar parks of 10,000 panels or more?

Yes, this is one of our core markets. We deploy several autonomous robots in parallel and can clean large installations in days rather than weeks. For parks of 50,000 panels or more, we offer a tailored project quote with dedicated teams and equipment on site.
