Why solar panels in the Netherlands get dirty faster than you think
The Netherlands has the most solar panels per inhabitant in Europe, but also a climate that speeds up soiling. The sea is close almost everywhere, there is a lot of intensive livestock farming in the centre and east, and the urbanised Randstad has high concentrations of fine dust. Few other countries have this combination of pollution sources.
Randstad: fine dust and industrial fallout
Half of all Dutch people live between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Solar panels in this area are constantly exposed to soot and fine dust from the A1, A2, A4, A12 and A20 motorways, plus industrial fallout from the port area of Rotterdam and Antwerp. At installations within 2 km of these motorways, we measure an average yield loss of 8–14% after 18 months without cleaning.
Livestock and arable farming in Gelderland, Brabant and Overijssel
The Netherlands is the world’s second-largest food exporter. That also means high concentrations of ammonia around pig and poultry sheds, and constant pollen from arable farming in Flevoland, the Veluwe and Brabant. The ammonia binds to fine dust and forms a sticky film. On agricultural installations in these regions, we measure yield losses of up to 22% after one season.
Coast, peat meadows and a damp climate
Nowhere in the Netherlands is more than 140 km from the sea, and salt deposits up to 20 km inland are not unusual. Combined with more than 180 rainy days a year and the peat meadows in the west, this quickly leads to algae and limescale. From request to report usually takes 1 to 3 weeks, and you don’t need to be there. We invoice in euros from Belgium. For Dutch businesses, the reverse charge mechanism applies: you account for the VAT in your own return.

Do you come to the Netherlands from Belgium?
Yes. Solarco is a Belgian company, but we work in the Netherlands every week, on fixed routes through the north, centre and south of the country. Dutch customers pay no extra travel costs on top of our fixed rates.
How does VAT work for Dutch businesses?
We invoice from Belgium. Dutch businesses account for the VAT in their own VAT return under the intra-community reverse charge mechanism. For private customers, the Belgian rate of 21% applies. Our invoices meet the requirements of the Dutch Tax Administration (Belastingdienst).
Do you offer maintenance contracts under Dutch law?
Yes. We offer multi-year contracts (2–5 years) under Dutch or Belgian law, whichever the customer prefers. A price guarantee, priority scheduling and a 10–15% volume discount are included as standard.
Can you provide reports for SDE++ installations?
Yes. Our reports contain the measurement data you need to account for the Dutch SDE++ subsidy: availability rates, maintenance dates and an indication of yield before and after cleaning. We also supply thermal imaging scans for your annual report.
How soon can you be on site in the Netherlands?
Usually 1 to 3 weeks after you accept the quote. In the south of the country (Brabant, Limburg, Zeeland), often within a week. In the north (Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe), we usually group 2 to 3 jobs on the same day so we can work efficiently.
How often should I have my solar panels cleaned in the Dutch climate?
Homes in town: every 1 to 2 years. Commercial buildings along motorways or on industrial estates: once a year. Farms or sites within 10 km of the coast: ideally every six months. Solar parks: 2 to 4 times a year. After each clean, you’ll receive advice based on what we find on site.
Do you work with Dutch installers?
Yes, we work with several Dutch installers who offer cleaning as part of their aftercare package. Would you like to offer cleaning under your own name (white label)? Call us to discuss the options.
What if it rains on the scheduled day?
Light drizzle is no problem: our robots and operators keep working. In heavy rain, storms or winds above 40 km/h, we move the job to the next suitable day. Rescheduling is always free of charge.
Do you also clean floating solar parks?
Yes. We have experience with floating solar on sand extraction lakes and buffer basins in Brabant and South Holland, among other places. We use dedicated equipment for this. For a floating installation, request a project quote.
Aren’t Friesland and Groningen too far for you?
Not at all. We schedule jobs in the north of the Netherlands in clusters, so we can carry out several on the same day. For businesses with several sites in the north, we offer attractive multi-site rates.
