Why solar panels in Belgium are polluting faster than you think
Belgium's climate and densely built-up environment create a unique combination of pollution factors. Unlike in dry or tropical countries, it is not one source of dirt here, but an accumulation: particulate matter from traffic, pollen and ammonia from agriculture, salt from coastal winds, and bird droppings that become especially persistent due to our humid winters.
Densely built-up and high traffic
Within the Antwerp-Brussels-Ghent triangle lies almost 40% of Belgium's population. Solar panels in these zones continuously receive fine dust, soot and rubber particles from motorways E40, E17, E19 and E313. We measure an average 8-12% efficiency loss in installations along these axes after 18 months without cleaning.
Intensive agriculture in Flanders and Wallonia
West Flanders, Limburg and Haspengouw have high concentrations of livestock and arable farming. Ammonia from stables binds to particulate matter and forms a sticky layer on glass. In the pollen seasons (April-June), we measure up to 20% efficiency losses at agricultural plants within 2 km of intensive operations.
Coastal and humid climate
Within 15 km of the North Sea, panels face salt precipitation and sand. Combined with our 200 rainy days a year, algae growth and limescale build up quickly. Residential roofs on the coast often benefit from semi-annual cleaning instead of annual.

Advantages of professional solar panel cleaning at Solarco
- Higher efficiency: Several studies show that cleaning solar panels can provide an efficiency improvement of a few percent to as much as 15%, depending on the degree of contamination.
- Longer lifespan: By preventing dirt build-up and hot spots, your entire system will last longer.
- Safety and warranty: Many manufacturers recommend professional cleaning to maintain the warranty. Climbing a roof yourself is also not without risk.
- Time savings: With the right tools and experience, we can take care of a large installation in a short time, while you yourself spend your precious time on other things.
- Sustainable approach: Osmosis water and robotic cleaning minimise the use of harmful chemicals, which is better for the environment as well as for the panels themselves.
Frequently asked questions about solar panel cleaning in Belgium
Do you operate throughout Belgium, or just Flanders?
We work in all 10 Belgian provinces plus the Brussels Region. Our team speaks Dutch and French. For Walloon clients, we offer reporting and communication entirely in French via our French-language page.
How soon can you come over?
Usually within 1 to 3 weeks of quote agreement, depending on season. From April to October is our busiest period - plan ahead preferably 3-4 weeks then. For urgent cases (e.g. visible damage or insurance issue), we can often visit within 5 working days.
Is solar panel cleaning tax deductible for Belgian companies?
Yes. As a Belgian company, you can fully deduct our invoice as a maintenance cost. The VAT (21%) is recoverable. For larger solar parks, cleaning is often included as an operational cost within the depreciation period.
Do you work with installers?
Yes, we work with several Belgian installers who offer cleaning as a maintenance service to their customers. Feel free to call us if you are an installer and would like to discuss a white label collaboration.
Does your insurance also apply outside Flanders?
Our liability and equipment insurance policies cover the whole of Belgium without limitation. The same conditions in Kortrijk as in Eupen.
How often should I clean in the Belgian climate?
This depends on your location and installation type. Residential in an urban area: every 1-2 years. Commercial in an industrial or rural area: annually. Agricultural or near coast: 1-2 times a year. Solar parks: 2 to 4 times a year depending on pollution pressure. With each cleaning, you will receive a recommendation based on what we find on site.
Do you offer multi-year contracts?
Yes. Multi-year maintenance contracts (2-5 years) are popular with companies and solar parks. You get price guarantee, priority in scheduling and typically 10-15% discount versus single turns.
What if it rains on the scheduled day?
We reschedule free of charge. Light drizzle is no problem - our robots and operators will continue working. In case of heavy rain, storm or wind >40 km/h, we reschedule to the next convenient day.
Can I have multiple locations cleaned at the same time?
Sure. For Belgian companies with multiple sites (retail chains, logistics, agro), we like to plan a multi-site turn. This usually results in a staff discount because we have less travel time.
Do you also work in the Belgian enclaves (Baarle-Hertog, Voeren)?
Yes. All Belgian municipalities are part of our catchment area, including enclaves and border regions.
