Why solar panels in the Netherlands are polluting faster than you think
The Netherlands has the highest number of solar panels per inhabitant in Europe, but also a climate that accelerates pollution. Sea breezes a short distance from almost every location, intensive livestock farming in the centre and east, and an urbanised Randstad with high concentrations of particulate matter create a combination of pollution sources that you find in few other countries.
Randstad: particulate matter and industrial precipitation
Half of all Dutch people live between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Solar panels in this triangle continuously receive soot and particulate matter from motorways A1, A2, A4, A12 and A20, plus industrial precipitation from the Rotterdam-Antwerp port area. We measure an average 8-14% efficiency loss at installations within 2 km of these axes after 18 months without cleaning.
Livestock and arable farming in Gelderland, Brabant and Overijssel
The Netherlands is the world's second-largest food exporter. That also means high concentrations of ammonia from pig and poultry houses and continuous pollutant pressure from arable farming in Flevoland, the Veluwe and Brabant. The ammonia binds to particulate matter and forms a sticky layer. At agricultural plants in these provinces, we measure up to 22% efficiency loss after one season.
Coastal, peatland and humid climate
No place in the Netherlands is further than 140 km from the sea. Salt precipitation up to 20 km inland is no exception. Combined with 180+ rainy days a year and the peat meadow areas in the west, algae growth and limescale quickly occur. Residential roofs in South Holland and North Holland often benefit from six-monthly cleaning.
