Why solar panels in Germany are polluting faster than you think
Germany is Europe's largest solar market with more than 90 GW of installed capacity. But the combination of dense construction in the Ruhr region, intensive agriculture in Bavaria and Lower Saxony, industrial zones along the Rhine and increasing Sahara sand episodes creates pollution conditions that require regular cleaning to maintain efficiency.
Ruhr region and urban agglomerations
The Ruhr region, the Rhine-Main region and Berlin-Brandenburg have the highest particulate load in Germany. Along the A1, A3, A5, A40 and A100, we measure an average 10-15% efficiency loss at plants within 2 km of the motorway after 18 months without cleaning. Soot deposits from diesel traffic and industrial emissions are particularly persistent.
Agricultural regions in Lower Saxony, NRW and Bavaria
Germany is one of Europe's largest agricultural producers. Regions with intensive livestock farming - especially the Weser-Ems region, Münsterland and Lower Bavaria - have high ammonia concentrations that bind with fine dust to form a sticky layer on the panels. In agricultural plants, we measure up to 20% yield loss after one season without cleaning.
Coastal regions and Saharan sand episodes
The North Sea and Baltic coasts bring salt spray up to 20 km inland. In addition, all southern states regularly experience Sahara sand episodes that cause significant yield losses in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg every year. After a Sahara sand event, yield losses can exceed 15% within a few days.

Frequently asked questions about solar panel cleaning in Germany
Are you coming to Germany from Belgium?
Yes. Solarco is a Belgian company based in Herentals, which regularly works in Germany. North Rhine-Westphalia and border regions are served as a priority. For projects in Bavaria, Saxony or northern Germany, we plan in clusters, to work efficiently - with no additional cost for relocation.
How does VAT work for German companies?
We invoice with Belgian VAT (21%). German companies can offset it in their own VAT return via the reverse charge mechanism (Reverse-Charge). Our invoices contain all required intra-community VAT numbers. For private individuals, the Belgian rate applies.
Is cleaning subsidisable in EEC installations?
The cleaning itself is not directly subsidised, but counts as a regular operating cost and is therefore deductible. Moreover, in many installations it is contractually required by the installer or insurer to maintain warranty and performance.
Do you work with German installers?
Yes, we have ongoing collaborations with several German installers offering cleaning as a maintenance service. Whitelabel collaborations are possible - contact us for terms and conditions.
How quickly can you be on site in Germany?
Usually 2 to 4 weeks after confirmation of the offer. NRW and Rhineland-Palatinate often within 1 to 2 weeks. For states further afield, we plan in clusters to maximise efficiency. Urgent deployments (insurance case, acute yield drop) can be done within 5 working days.
How often should cleaning be carried out in Germany?
Private in urban zone: every 1 to 2 years. Companies along motorways or in industrial zones: annually. Agriculture and coastal regions: half-yearly recommended. Solar parks: 2 to 4 times a year. With each cleaning, you will receive an advice based on what we find on site.
Do you also work on express basis after Saharazand episodes?
Yes. After major Sahara sand events, we have express teams available for southern Germany and Baden-Württemberg. These deployments can be done within 5 to 10 days, even without an existing maintenance contract.
Do you produce reports suitable for insurance and audits?
Yes. Our reports contain all the elements expected by German insurers and EEG inspectors: before/after photos, thermographic recordings, determinations, recommendations, date and operator name. They are regularly used for warranty claims and annual audits.
What if it rains on the scheduled day?
We reschedule free of charge. Light rain is no problem - our robots and operators work through. In case of heavy rain, storm or wind >40 km/h, we reschedule to the next convenient day.
Do you also clean ground installations and solar parks from 10,000 panels upwards?
Yes. This is one of our core markets. We deploy several autonomous robots in parallel and can clean large installations within days rather than weeks. For parks starting from 50,000 panels, we offer tailor-made project quotations with dedicated teams and equipment on site.
