Why solar panels in France are polluting faster than you think
France is Europe's second solar market with more than 20 GW of installed capacity. But its geographical diversity - from the Mediterranean climate to agricultural regions in the north, via industrial zones and the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts - creates very different pollution situations per region. A single approach is not enough.
Mediterranean regions: dust, Sahara sand and heat
PACA, Occitanie and Corsica regularly experience Sahara sand storms. Combined with high temperatures and low rainfall, these deposits form a persistent crust that can cause yield losses of up to 20% within a few weeks. Cleaning in spring and after each dust episode is almost indispensable.
Agricultural zones and industry in the north and east
Hauts-de-France, Grand Est and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté combine intensive agriculture, pollen, animal husbandry and heavy industry. Ammonia from cattle and pig farms forms a sticky film on the panels, enhanced by particulate matter from the A1, A2, A4 and A31 motorways. Average yield loss: 10-16% per year without maintenance.
Coastal and wetland regions
Brittany, Normandy, Pays de la Loire and Nouvelle-Aquitaine combine salty sea winds, high precipitation and constant humidity. Sea salt migrates up to 25 km inland. Combined with frequent rainfall, this promotes algal growth and calcification. Coastal plants often require semi-annual cleaning.

Active throughout France
Our Belgian team visits France on a monthly basis. For large industrial projects and solar parks, we temporarily place our equipment on site. We work as a priority in the regions bordering Belgium, but serve the whole territory for projects over 500 panels.

Frequently asked questions about solar panel cleaning in France
Do you get anywhere in France from Belgium?
Yes. Solarco is a Belgian company based in Herentals, but we operate monthly in France. The neighbouring regions (Hauts-de-France, Grand Est, Île-de-France) are served as a priority. For the south and west, we plan in groups of interventions.
How does VAT work for French companies?
We invoice with Belgian VAT (21%). French companies can reclaim this VAT through the intra-community reverse charge mechanism. Our invoices contain the required intra-community VAT numbers. For private individuals, the Belgian rate applies.
Is cleaning deductible for a photovoltaic plant with feed-in allowance?
Yes. Cleaning is considered an ongoing operating cost and is therefore deductible. It is also often required by installer maintenance contracts to maintain warranty and contractual performance.
Will you come over for ground installations and carports?
Yes. Our robots are adapted to large flat and sloping surfaces. For car parks with carports, we use telescopic brushes or aerial platforms depending on the height. We regularly work on parks of 1,000 to 50,000 panels.
Can you provide reports suitable for insurance audits?
Absolutely. Our reports include before/after photos, thermographic images, detailed determinations and recommendations. They are regularly used by our customers for insurance declarations, factory guarantees and annual performance audits.
How often should cleaning be carried out in France?
This depends very much on the region. Mediterranean and Saharan sand zones: 2 to 3 times a year. Agricultural and industrial zones: 1 to 2 times a year. Atlantic coast: at least annually, ideally semi-annually. Residential in rural or temperate urban zone: every 1 to 2 years.
Do you work with French installers?
Yes, we work with several French installers who offer cleaning as a maintenance service to their customers. We can also work in white label. Get in touch to discuss the modalities.
What if it rains on the scheduled day?
We reschedule free of charge. Light drizzle is no problem - our robots and operators will continue working. In case of heavy rain, storm or wind >40 km/h, we reschedule to the next convenient day.
Do you work with the big retail and logistics players?
Yes. We work for groups with multiple sites in France, often under multi-year multi-site contracts. We manage planning, centralised invoicing and consolidated reports.
How long does an intervention on a 5,000-panel plant take?
About 1.5 to 2 days with our automatic robot, depending on accessibility. We work continuously during daylight, with a team of 2 to 3 people plus the robot. For plants with more than 20,000 panels, we deploy several robots in parallel.
